The shoe needing filling here is Vice President’s vacant Senate seat. The two candidates up for this spot are Republican Christine O’Donnell and Democrat Chris Coons. The pair faced off in a heated debate at the University of Delaware in Newark last Wednesday.
The campus had many political activists roaming its premises on the day of the debate. Some were students, but the vast majority was way past college graduation. Students of the university could be seen not far off from the debate’s location; however, many of them admitted that they had not been following their state’s election race.
This is pretty strange since the uncovering of O’Donnell’s past of “dabbling in witchcraft” has been parody on shows like the Daily Show and Saturday Night Live.
With so many students clearly uninterested in the race, the elusive solution to getting the youth to vote still remains unanswered.
I got me thinking about my own life. I’m going to vote this year for the first time- I finally reached the big-one-eight in time. With so many students remaining idle in their political opinions, the trap here is to either vote for whom your parents would vote for or just not vote at all.
I realize that I can’t just focus on the candidate I feel like I identify with most. I have to look at both opponents thoroughly and then, make my decision. For those who remain idle during this election and DON’T vote, I don’t want to hear any lip about higher taxes, crappier education systems, or government overspending.

Your blog makes me laugh!
ReplyDeleteI think families can be put into three categories as far as politics go: diehard Democrat/Republican/what-have-you, apathetic, or completely divided.
My immediate family falls somewhere in the apathetic realm, but bring the rest of my family into the picture and it sounds a lot like yours.
I'm excited for most posts!
Side note- I think all of the Christine O'Donnell hype is ridiculous. She might be on her way toward becoming the next Sarah Palin: a soon-to-be reality star who's favored for being quirkily attractive and 'real.' Is that what politics are supposed to be about?

hahahahaha Sara this is awesome!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that you're encouraging readers to get the facts and VOTE. This difference between your blogs and others is that the reader is called to act. We aren't just reading about fashion or food trucks or Jackass 3, we're reading about politics that shape our present and future. We have a say in this! You made a great example of what UT should not be- Delaware. This may "scare" readers into becoming more politically active for fear of a "witch."
